Some of the themes I'm exploring are:

  • how isolation, homogeneity, and fear lead to hateful ideologies like white supremacy.
  • what it means to take accountability in the present for (and heal from) the horrible things we understand about our collective past.
  • the intimate cultural experience of language-learning, and the way the structure of a language can inform its home culture, and vice-versa.
  • cute queer dudes smoochin' on each other.

FAQ

Q. Is it a graphic novel or a prose novel or what?

A. Great question. It's not going to be 100% text, and it's not going to be 100% comics, but I'm still working out what the balance of text to images will be since I write and illustrate. Right now, I'm working on writing the whole thing and illustrating important parts with comics, similarly to how I illustrated Overwhelm. But the more ambitious goal I have is to make whole sections of the novel be graphic novel as a narrative device... so stay tuned.

Q. What about ebooks and audiobooks?

A. Ebooks, definitely. Audiobook... well, it's expensive to get them made, and this is much longer than Overwhelm where I didn't mind eating the cost upfront to pay my amazing voice actors. I'd like to make an audiobook, but I think that'll depend on the interest level. (Or, perhaps, if I can get a Kickstarter going!)

Q. When is it coming out?

A. Well, I'd love to have it done by the end of 2023. That's pretty unlikely, though. So early 2024 is a safer estimate.
